Every time a new film or television project about transgender people comes about, it gets exponentially more frustrating to have the same conversations about how our stories should be told. Therein lies the real truth of our cultural relationship to cisgender people: to many of those embedded in the dominant culture, transgender stories do not, on a fundamental level, belong to trans people.

This can be true even when the ostensible protagonist or the focal point of a documentary is a transgender person played by same. Such is the tragedy of Boy Meets Girl. Not to be confused with the BBC sitcom of the same name, which also charted the romance between a cis man and a trans woman, Boy Meets Girl is a romantic comedy starring Michelle Hendley as Ricky, a year-old trans girl from rural Kentucky who dreams of taking her passion for fashion to New York City.

Stuck in her coffee shop job, Ricky whiles away her time hanging out with Robby Michael Welch , her best friend since first grade, with whom she enjoys an easy, tease-y relationship. Spoilers and some slurs follow! The resulting love polygon is peculiar, to say the least. That this liberation of the self closely mirrors the language of transition is, of course, no coincidence.

Although Ricky does have agency in breaking things off with Francesca, these stories are not hers; she learns nothing from them and does not grow as a result of their presence in her life.

Frankly, this kind of sucks — especially when Boy Meets Girl ties itself up in so many knots to make this point, when it could have been accomplished so much more easily. Ricky must break up with Francesca so that she and Robby can get together instead, a pairing made all the more confounding given that their climactic kiss occurs shortly after a vicious tirade by Robby. But nothing about this makes sense.

Why would Ricky want to have sex with Robbie so soon after such cruelty? I will never pass up an opportunity to propagandize for polyamory. Like their cis audience, Robby, Francesca, and David all draw on Ricky as inspiration to live their separate truths, experiencing moments of clarity that push them to organize a crowdfunding campaign through which Ricky and Robby can move to New York together to pursue her dream. As can be seen on Twitter daily, trans people do rely on the kindness of strangers to fund everything from clothes to surgery to basic food and housing needs.

You might come away from this essay believing that Boy Meets Girl is a bad movie. Simply casting trans actors in trans roles is not, and never has been, sufficient.
