Find a woman who is too good for you

I still have fond memories of Nora from accounting — the only person worth remembering from my short stint at a sleazy Wall Street firm. She was smart, beautiful, kind, personable, and rising up the ranks. I was a shy, struggling year-old salesperson with thinning hair. By every metric, she was out of my league. Still, she spurned all the self-absorbed rich assholes who tried to impress her. Instead, she ate lunch with me almost every day and invented reasons to chat with me during downtimes.

When You Love Someone Who’s Out Of Your League

I still have fond memories of Nora from accounting — the only person worth remembering from my short stint at a sleazy Wall Street firm. She was smart, beautiful, kind, personable, and rising up the ranks. I was a shy, struggling year-old salesperson with thinning hair. By every metric, she was out of my league.

Still, she spurned all the self-absorbed rich assholes who tried to impress her. Instead, she ate lunch with me almost every day and invented reasons to chat with me during downtimes. On Thursday nights, the senior VP took everyone out for drinks. My boss, Brian, knew I was smitten with her, and he exploited that knowledge to motivate me. Unhappy with my sales numbers, he called me into his office for a drubbing.

An intimidating figure with his sculpted hair, expensive suit, gaudy cufflinks, and heavy Brooklyn accent, Brian sat me down for what any sane person would deem an inappropriate workplace conversation. But this was Wall Street in the 90s, and the moneymakers made the rules. Yes, he was crude and misogynistic. But he was rich and powerful, and I was impressionable.

He had me believing she was too good for me. Weeks later, Nora announced her resignation. On her last day, a bunch of us went out for drinks. Nora and I found a quiet nook to chat. My boss busied himself running up an impressive tab, and I had already decided to seek a career change. With nothing to lose, I suggested we keep in touch. She grabbed a cocktail napkin and wrote down her phone number.

We met up a few times after that night, but our workplace chemistry never carried over to our outside life. We parted as friends. But that experience began to shatter the fiction that a man or woman should ever feel disqualified from loving or even dating someone because of money differences, perceived attractiveness, social status, or titles.

Have you ever been in that situation? The words pan across your mind like an electronic billboard in Times Square. The belief that someone is out of your league has nothing to do with the quality of the other person, and everything to do with how you value yourself. We make these judgments based on culturally defined and arbitrary metrics.

I once thought a man had to make more money than the woman he dated. No room for context or circumstance. It was a binary issue. I know plenty of men who still believe that. For a long time, I struggled with shyness. I believed it disqualified me from dating charismatic and outgoing women.

Later, I learned complimentary personalities make for more successful relationships. What you see as a flaw in yourself, someone else might interpret as quirky and interesting. I lived a lost decade where I abstained from dating because of my thinning hair. Assessing your self-worth based on physical appearance defies all logic. Much of it is beyond your control, and it says nothing about you as a human being.

So much of our existence revolves around status. Status differences only matter because we assign importance to them, and much of it is situational. A particular background or job title might give you eminence in some circles while pegging you as second-rate in another. Sometimes your life takes a detour to the dark side. As a result, you place a lesser value on yourself. Let it serve as a wake-up call to course-correct your life. A slump or change in fortune can shatter self-confidence.

What if your life hums along just fine, and you still feel like you fail to measure up? Evaluate yourself based on qualities that make humans valuable to one another. Sign in. Barry Davret Follow. Find A Woman Who’s Too Good For You, And Become Better For Her

Thompson believed that the "nice" men she wanted to attract were intimidated by her because she's beautiful and successful. The only men who were interested, she thought, wanted flings and no commitment. The Monday-iest Monday ever..

So here are three good reasons why I would like to recommend this book and why I think it should be widely read by others. First of all, its a great read. Its one of those types of book that is so easy to read and that draws you in, so that you want to find out what comes next.

Find a woman who is actually too good for you. She has to be a woman who deserves better. She has to be a woman that every man aspires to be with. She is the kind of girl who would give everything that she has into a relationship and into you who you are. She is the kind of woman who knows that she deserves better, but she loves you too much to just let you go.
