I want to kiss my guy friend on the cheek

Different kisses are meant to convey different nonverbal messages. It is therefore very important for one to not only know when to kiss but how to kiss. A kiss on the cheek will convey a totally different message from a kiss on the cheek. The same applies to the message conveyed by a kiss on the lips. That said, you need to take some time to figure out how to go about this rather complicated kissing business. Thankfully, there are plenty of online sites that anyone can access and enjoy useful information free of charge.

Don't get me wrong — I love kissing. Long ago I even agreed to be filmed kissing my then boyfriend as part of short Foxtel television show on the topic of kissing, not of me and my ex-boyfriend. I'd tell you more about the contents of that surreal slice of reality TV but the only copy I possess is on video cassette, I have no way of watching it and, frankly, life is too short. That said, I vividly recall the day of filming. We were ushered into a studio, instructed to perch on what turned out to be a revolving table and directed to tilt our heads together as the camera began to roll.

Nicole Kidman congratulates her co-star Alexander Skarsgard with a kiss on the lips at the Emmys while husband Keith Urban claps his congratulations. Oddly, that was not my first public piece of lip service. During my student days I agreed to be part of a photo shoot for the cover of a new single by a band called the Blue Aeroplanes.

When I say "photo shoot", what really happened was that I'd gone around to my boyfriend's house a different boyfriend for dinner with a gang of mates that included most of the band.

As we ate spaghetti bolognaise made from something called Sosmix a kooky meat substitute beloved of undergraduates of the time someone — probably singer Gerard Langley — picked up a camera and started shooting me and the guy sitting next to me, guitarist Richard Bell. Helen O'Neill. Credit: nicole. When I saw the image on the record sleeve two things struck me. The first was bitter disappointment that it cropped out what I then considered my most striking feature — a shock of sharply tortured, highly lacquered, goth-punk, Siouxsie Sioux-style hair.

The second thing was that Richard had clearly been sitting much closer to me than I had realised. That close up of our two faces made it look as though he was leaning in for a kiss that I was not expecting at all. It certainly did that. The image flashed into my mind the other day when I bumped into a friend I hadn't seen for ages and he bent forward to kiss me — not on the cheek but full on the mouth. We exchanged our news and said our goodbyes.

Minutes later I crossed paths with another friend I hadn't seen for years. There's an old gag about how kissing is like real estate because it's all about location, but neither of these individuals was hitting on me.

My male friend is happily married and my female friend is straight. This was not sexual but it was profoundly confusing, and it had happened to me before. I moved to Australia from the UK in the late s, back when friends did not seem to touch much at all. Formal situations were defined by handshakes while social encounters could provoke in me at least a strain of awkwardness so severe that I occasionally attempted to alleviate it by waving at people even if I was standing right in front of them.

Around the early '90s, warmth went mainstream. No doubt some had been doing this forever but for the rest of us, saying 'hi' to a buddy — male or female — by kissing them once on the right cheek became the norm. As long as generally speaking at least one person in the mix was female.

Then came the Noughties, an acceleration in pop culture's re-evaluation of notions of masculinity, and a tipping point in the world of greetings. Everybody, including straight guys, started diving into each other arms. Some blame this so-called Hug Era on the US TV show Sopranos , which ran from to and turned the hug-addicted, therapy-prone mobster Tony Soprano into a twisted, ultra-violent version of a new sensitive male.

It may be pure coincidence but seared into my memory is that it was around this time that I witnessed my brother kiss my father for the first time. The hugging habit spread like Vegemite. It felt good and scientific studies appeared explaining why embracing lowers the body's release of stress-inducing cortisol and boosts of the so-called "happiness hormone" oxytocin. But looking back on it, I wonder whether this was when touchy-feely social niceties went one step further, and friend-on-friend lip-locking began.

So far my encounters with this phenomenon have been sporadic. The weirdest iterations have involved moments when married men have kissed me on the lips in front of their partners — a gesture potentially loaded with complications that all three of us seem to have taken some silent vow to ignore. It's as if I've missed the memo, or at least misread it. At this year's Emmy Awards ceremony in Los Angeles, it turned out Nicole Kidman was an advocate of this new trend too.

Kidman features in the television series Big Little Lies, and as her co-star Alexander Skarsgard stood up to accept his Best Supporting Actor award, she stopped him and planted a kiss directly on his lips while her husband Keith Urban looked on. Then the Weinstein scandal hit, opening a floodgate to behaviour reassessment in the workplace and beyond. Will Weinstein affect how friends kiss each other? Anything's possible, particularly when etiquette moves as fast as ours seems to be.

In a vague attempt for clarity I contacted my sister. She has lived in France, one of the spiritual homes of the kiss, for around 30 years and in her region friends kiss hello on the cheek three times rather than the usual two, which often confounds the unwary. Would a French person kiss a friend on lips, I asked her.

My reactions to the full-frontal smooch depend on the kisser. From some it is a jarring invasion of personal space best negotiated with a lightening head-swivel and presentation of the cheek. Yet there are moments when being lip-kissed by a friend feels like the most beautifully trusting of gestures, as though the years have dropped away and we are children again. We're not, though, and this is party season, a time for frolics and fun, not for over-thinking.

So watch my lips. If I'm pleased to see you, you'll know it because, for now, my approach can be summed up in just one word. Etiquette: a kiss on the lips between friends becomes a new norm. The Sydney Morning Herald.
