I Am Not My Father

This weekend, my mother celebrates her 60th birthday. In two months, my father will celebrate his 60th as well. Unfortunately, the miles separate us. And I regret not being able to be there to celebrate with them. My mother and father have always been wonderful parents to me.

They have worked hard to provide a stable foundation for my life and future. They have taught me invaluable life lessons about work, marriage, parenting, relationships, and life. Thank you for so many valuable life lessons. Follow on Twitter Like on Facebook. It was absolutely wonderful. I was just sharing what and how much I learnt from my parents with my son.

They requested that I remain single and we restart elsewhere. I agreed and 7 yrs later a single parent, with so much better life just me and my children and now they are well-adjusted and super happy and proud they spoke up. I was able to raise them the way my parents raised me. Thank you for sharing and so many people are not as blessed. I was just sitting here this morning thinking about my own parents.

Mine were the exact opposite of your parents. Abuse, rejection, invalidation were daily lessons from both parents. I am always amazed when others share their awsome experiences. What amazing gifts to have in your life!

God bless. A beautiful tribute to your parents. I remember many of the same attributes in my parents. There were many wonderful moments and many not so wonderful moments growing up. But probably the number 1 value they shared was devotion to their marriage.

You take the best moments from those memories and carry on. You take the harder moments from those memories and make change. Get involved with volunteering, get involved with those around you, choose to be happy. And in choosing to be happy if it means making changes, have courage to do so. Again, a beautiful tribute to your parents. Thanks for ones marvelous posting!

I quite enjoyed reading it, you can be a great author. I will always bookmark your blog and will eventually come back someday. I want to encourage you to ultimately continue your great writing, have a nice day! Although I have never had children of my own, I have learned so much from the children of others. I am a very proud uncle and surrogate grampa! You are a very fortunate kid.

Unfortunately I could not be a good parent for my kids because my values were wrong. But I have learnt a lot from your example and your parents and hopefully will be a better parent in my next life.

Thank you Joshua for sharing it and please say a prayer for me so that I can be a better grandparent. I grew up in Foster care with parents who were rednecks and alcoholics who taught me all the wrong ways to live in life. Thanks to my personal mission to eventually find and seek God I now have started to become the person I was always meant to be.

Through him only. This inspired me to know what real parents teach their children when they love them. I was not loved growing up. Thanks a lot, Joshua. I lost my father in when I was a small boy.

I always feel bad each time my mind goes back. No father to advice me. And I always believe that this impacted my life negatively. I will go over it again and again. That is my father! Very grateful, sir! Thank you for your post. It reminds me that there are good people in the world who foster good families. Nice to read a positive post that speaks to the soul rather than wallowing in the many unpleasant news stories that surround the media each day.

What a load of crap! The title should be rewritten as: 60 obvious realisations you have by the age of My favourite is work hard…amazing life lesson, this is one of the lessons I will always try to follow.

I loved this! It reminded me of the way I was raised. My father was from Germany and taught me many valuable lessons. Thank you for this! Your parents must be so touched and moved by this post. You have done a beautiful thing. They are so young still too. My father-in-law is about to turn 81 and with a bit of effort does get down on the floor to play board games with my girls.

I get tears in my eyes every time I see him make the effort and it makes me appreciate the small-big things in life I have recently just moved to Aberdeen, Scotland so it raised a smile when that lesson was mentioned :. Great tips! An amazing thing to be able to leave your children with what life is really all about.

A great read for any mother or father trying to raise their children with good wholesome values. Thank you! Im glad to have found this post as its such an interesting one! I am always on the lookout for quality posts and articles so i suppose im lucky to have found this! I hope you will be adding more in the future…. Joshua-Thank you for this beautiful tribute. It was great you listed the positives rather than the negatives.

We have made many mistakes along the way but we both love God and each other and that has covered a multitude of shortcomings. We love each of you kids dearly and thank God for you. You have enriched our lives with your families and we thank you for that.

It has been a great 60 years and only getting better. Our prayer is that our lives will bring glory to God and we will finish strong showing the love of Jesus Christ, our Savior.

Love you too mom and dad. Thanks for everything. Beautiful words — now we know where you get it from Joshua! Very inspiring, thanks Joshua. You will only have them once in your life, appreciate and celebrate their presence.

Loved your list, some of those same things I learned from my parents and most are what I try to teach my kids! This is lovely. Obviously you have wonderful parents.

So many do not. I pray I have inspired my children with at least soem of these 60 lessons. Thank you. Respect character. Your character is of far more value than anything you can sell it for. He always told me, never lose your good name for money. Integrity is something no one can ever take from you and it is the most important character trait to me.

I try to keep the site uncluttered as much as possible — which means some things need to be removed.

So, are you dating your dad?

My husband and I have been married for 12 years. We have two small kids, and we both work and are doing well financially. My in-laws, on the other hand, are not faring so well. My father-in-law owned his own business that went south and is still trying to revive it, and my mother-in-law has never worked a day in her life, even now with four kids grown and gone. They are an old-school couple in which the wife is completely in the dark about the finances and the husband is too proud to share any details.

These are letters we received about stories that appeared in the November — December issue of L. He only spanked me to discipline me when I fought with my brother.

This weekend, my mother celebrates her 60th birthday. In two months, my father will celebrate his 60th as well. Unfortunately, the miles separate us. And I regret not being able to be there to celebrate with them.

Stronger for the Breaks – How to Heal from a Toxic Parent

There is a different kind of hurt that can only come from a toxic parent — someone who is meant to love you. Kind of like being broken from the inside out. None of us are perfect, including our parents, but there is a point at which imperfect becomes destructive, taking away from children the love, warmth and nurturing they deserve and replacing it with something awful. Toxic parents come in many shapes. Some are a bit more subtle.

I work to meet all clients where they are - working first to understand their needs and employing the tools needed to help them become their best, most empowered selves. I have never hated anyone before, but I can honestly say that I hate my father.

Four years ago, on a typically cold and overcast day in upstate NY, I found myself scurrying around preparing for a two-week trip to Kenya and Tanzania, which left the next day. My father, a strong and soft-spoken sixty-two year old, had aspired to experience the great plains and animals of east Africa since childhood, and was deeply proud that he was able to pay for me to accompany him on his bucket-list adventure. After tying up loose ends with my boss and direct reports, I hurried home to double-check that my new sump pump was working before finally turning my attention to packing.

30+ Sympathy Card Message Ideas for the Loss of a Father

There's that old saying about apples and how they don't fall far from the tree. Sometimes they do and sometimes that apple decides to jump and fly away to make sure it's not considered too close to the parental tree. Enter this trope. This is when a child decides for themselves that they aren't going to repeat the same mistakes that their parents have made.

Getty Images. Carl Jung called it the Electra complex — a latent desire to kill our mothers and possess our fathers — declaring it a stage of development every girl goes through between three and six years old. Basically, the interactions we have with our fathers as young girls are our earliest opportunity to practise communication with the opposite sex. Previous studies have shown that women use their primary father figure as a template for picking a mate even if they are adopted, suggesting that sexual imprinting is led by experience and not simply genetic. But it turned out these men were also dishonest and distant, just as her father had been.
